Bertina Alvina Johnson was born December 14, 1917, in Camp Lake Township, Swift County, Minnesota, the daughter of Andrew R. and Bertha (Monson) Simonson. She was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith at St. Paulie Lutheran Church near Swift Falls. She grew up and attended grade school in rural Swift County, and graduated from Benson High School. On July 11, 1941, Bertina was united in marriage to Floyd Sander Martin Johnson at Rolling Forks Lutheran Church Parsonage by Rev. Rohne. This marriage was blessed with six children and 58 years of marriage. The family farmed in the Swift Falls area until 1978 when they moved to Benson. In December of 2001, Bertina moved to Barrett Care Center in Barrett, Minnesota. When she was in Benson, Bertina was a member of St. Paulie Lutheran Church and was active in the ladies aid and served as Sunday School teacher. Later, they became members of Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church. She was also a member of the VFW Auxiliary, a Homemaker's group, and a Kitchen Band. Among the things she enjoyed were cooking for the family, Bingo, and especially the company of her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Bertina was called from this life on Monday, March 15, 2010 at Barrett Care Center. She attained the age of 92 years, 3 months and 1 day. Bertina is survived by her children: Lowell (Audrey) Johnson of Minneapolis, Roger (Susie) Johnson of New Hope, Harold (Barb) Johnson of Savage, Irene (Bob) Shervey of Barrett, Brenda (Dennis) Horgan of Weymouth, MA, and Ray Johnson of St. Paul; sixteen grandchildren: Mary, Monica, Melissa, Kenny, Kathy, Andy, Michael, Lori, Patricia, Diane, Martin, Peter, Sean, Trevor, Sander and Cassondra; twelve great grandchildren: Scott, Meagan, Jackson, Steven, Nicholas, Daniel, Devin, Jasmine, Nathen, Leif, Sierra, and Hannah; sister-in-law, Gertie Simonson of Benson; and other relatives and friends. Preceding her in death were her husband, Floyd in 2000; parents, Andrew and Bertha; brothers: Arnold, Roy, Melvin and Davis Simonson; and sisters: Dena Kvamme and Helga Ronholdt.
