Betty Marie Shelstad

Betty Shelstad, age 94, of Montevideo, formerly of Appleton, passed away Monday evening, May 17, 2021, in Chippewa County Montevideo Health.  A private family service will be held.  Burial will be in Good Shepherd Lutheran Cemetery in Hegbert Township.

Betty Marie Shelstad was born January 22, 1927, in Darwin, Minnesota, the daughter of William and Lydia (Krakau) Rien.  She was raised in the Darwin area where she graduated high school, Class of 1945.  Betty attended Normal School, to earn her Teaching Certificate.  She taught country school for three years and then moved to the Twin Cities, where she was a nanny.  Later, she waitressed at Club 7-75 and was the Correll City Clerk for many years.  Betty was a Foster Grandparent for the Headstart Program in Appleton for 14 years…she especially enjoyed her time as “Grandma Betty.”

Betty passed away May 17, 2021, in Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital.  She attained 94 years, 3 months, and 25 days of age.  Betty is survived by her children: Mike (Mary) Block of Correll, Beth (Pat) Schroeder of Canby, Donna Wilberg of Alexandria, and Debra Shelstad of Montevideo; son-in-law, Elwood Sorenson of Montevideo; seven grandchildren: Erik (Allison) Sorenson, Krist (Barbara) Sorenson, Jesse (Hope) Christianson, Micah Christianson, Lisa (Robert) Crepps, Amy (Calvin) Schumacher, and Brian Wilberg; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Katie Rien, Doris Matejka, and Arlene (Richard) Knutson; brother-in-law, Eldon (Ian) Shelstad; and other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Maynard Shelstad; her parents, William and Lydia Rien; her daughter, Vicki Sorenson; her son-in-law, Lyndon Wilberg; and her brothers and sisters.
