Derald Eugene Lindquist was born in Ortonville, Minnesota, on January 5, 1933, to Fred E. and Clara O. (Helgeson) Lindquist. His early years were spent on the farm in Otrey Township, east of Ortonville. When Derald was ten years old his parents purchased a farm north of Ortonville and moved to that location. He attended country school through eighth grade and graduated from Ortonville High School in 1951. For the next several years Derald helped on the home farm and worked as a hired hand for area farmers.

In November 1956 Derald was drafted into the United States Army. He served at Fort Chaffee, Arkansas, Fort Benning, Georgia, and Fort Lewis, Washington. He was honorably discharged in November 1958.

Following his military service, Derald returned to the family farm and farmed in partnership with his brother Charles from 1958 until 1972. In 1972 Derald was united in marriage with Judy Thymian. They later divorced. Derald bought the farm Judy’s parents had owned. He farmed until retirement and continued to live on the farm until his passing.

Derald was proud of his military service and was active in AmVets Post 151, Appleton, and the American Legion Post 72, Appleton. He loved to serve with the AmVets honor guard and always willingly helped set up flags of honor in Appleton for holiday and community events. He was also active in Alcoholics Anonymous. Although he was somewhat shy, Derald often talked of traveling to AA chapters in the area and speaking. He was proud of his collection of medallions celebrating decades of sobriety.

Through a unique set of circumstances, Derald ended up owning a Cadillac. He said that when he was in the army, he had driven a friend’s Cadillac and always thought he would like to own one. For the last five years of his life, Derald very proudly drove his maroon Cadillac SUV.

Derald was called from this life on Saturday, November 23, 2024, at his residence in rural Correll, Minnesota. He was 91 years of age.

Derald was preceded in death by his parents Fred and Clara Lindquist and his brother Charles Lindquist. He is survived by his sister Myrna (John) Adams of Lakeville, MN; his brother Gordon (Diane) Lindquist of Ortonville, MN; nephews and niece: John (Susan) Adams of Castle Rock, CO; Nathan Adams of Northfield, MN; Jason (Lindsay) Adams of Rosemount, MN; Heidi (Matt) Bucher of Fergus Falls, MN; and Mark Lindquist of Lviv, Ukraine.
