Derald William Wilkening

Derald Wilkening, age 90, of Appleton, passed away Friday, November 4, 2022, in Appleton Area Health-Care Center.  Visitation will be 10-11 a.m., followed by the funeral service at 11 a.m., Thursday, November 10, 2022, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Appleton.  Pastor John Ramsbacher will officiate.  Burial will be in Appleton City Cemetery.

Derald William Wilkening was born October 8, 1932, at home in Shible Township, Swift County, Minnesota, to parents Leo and Marie “Mary” (Behrens) Wilkening.  Derald was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Shible Township and was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Appleton.  He was raised in the Appleton area and graduated from Appleton High School, Class of 1950.  Derald proudly enlisted in the Minnesota National Guard.  He moved to Richland, Washington, working for the municipal water treatment facility for 28 years.  Derald was also employed by General Electric for a couple years while living in WA.

Derald loved the outdoors, where he could hunt ducks, pheasants, geese, deer, moose and go fishing!  He also enjoyed reading, doing word puzzles and bird watching and feeding.  Derald would follow the MN Twins and at times the Vikings.  He delivered Meals-on-Wheels and was involved in many other organizations within the Appleton Community.  Derald was a long-time member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Appleton, where he served as an usher for many years.

Derald passed away Friday, November 4, 2022, in Appleton Area Health-Care Center.  He attained 90 years and 26 days of age.  Derald is survived by his nieces and nephews: Ruth Moe of Grand Prairie, TX, Beth (Dan) Bennett of Montevideo, Anita Wilkening of WA, Greg (Pamela) Wilkening of Granite Falls, and Brad (Shelly) Wilkening of Becker; his great-nieces and great-nephews: Lacey (Adam) Parker, Caley (Jason Theisen) Johnson, Josie Wilkening, Jena Wilkening, Kristina Wilkening, John Wilkening, Zachary (Nicole) Wilkening; and other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leo and Marie “Mary” Wilkening; and his brothers: LeRoy (Darlene) Wilkening and Donald (Delores) Wilkening.
