Karen was born on October 18, 1945, in Appleton, Minnesota, the daughter of Willard and Doris (Henneberg) Emde. She was baptized in 1945 by Pastor Paul Gierke at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Shible Township and was confirmed in 1959 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Appleton, by Pastor Rueben Meissner. Karen grew up on a farm in rural Correll, Minnesota.
After graduating from Appleton High School, Karen continued her education at Concordia College in St. Paul, Minnesota. She began her working career at Northern States Power Company in Minneapolis and later became a secretary at St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Karen moved to the Portland, Oregon area in the Fall of 1971. She attended Multnomah School of the Bible to become a missionary. Karen continued her education by earning her degree in nursing at Oregon Health and Science University and later became a registered nurse. During this time, Karen was diagnosed with lupus, a challenge she faced with great courage and faith. It was also during this time that she met Stephen Glenn, who would later become her husband.
On April 22, 1978, Karen and Stephen were united in marriage at Reedwood Friends Church in Portland, Oregon. Karen dedicated her life to the service of others, working as a registered nurse at several hospitals in the Portland area.
Later in 1998, Karen and Stephen relocated to Owatonna, Minnesota, to be closer to her family and the Mayo Clinic. In Owatonna, she continued her compassionate work as a registered nurse, a home health care nurse, and a volunteer driver for Healthy Seniors.
