Laura Marie Thomson

Laura Thomson, age 41, of Appleton, Minnesota, died Sunday, January 19, 2025, at the Mayo Clinic Hospital – Methodist Campus in Rochester, Minnesota. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, January 30, 2025, at Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton, Minnesota. Visitation will continue from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 31, 2025, at the church followed by the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at the Appleton City Cemetery. Zniewski Funeral Home – Vaala Chapel in Appleton, Minnesota, is assisting the family with arrangements.

Laura Marie Thomson was born on March 15, 1983, in Appleton, Minnesota. She was the daughter of James Vaala, Jr. and Bonnie (Hiepler) Vaala. She was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Appleton, Minnesota.

Laura grew up in Appleton, attended Appleton Elementary School and graduated from Lac qui Parle Valley High School with the Class of 2001. She continued her education at St. Cloud State University, receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications in 2006.

On April 28, 2012, Laura was united in marriage to Cody Thomson at Zion Lutheran Church. Together they had two children Makia and Layton.

Laura lived in Willmar, St. Cloud, and Appleton. She held various jobs at Prairie Correctional Facility in Appleton, Prairie Sun Bank, Aerospray, and Dauntless Air. She was a member of the Appleton Chamber of Commerce, EDA, and Prairie Playhouse.

Laura enjoyed golfing, playing bingo, going to the lake, traveling, and watching her children’s sporting events.

Laura was called from this life on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Mayo Clinic Hospital - Methodist Campus in Rochester, Minnesota. She was 41 years old. She is survived by her husband Cody Thomson of Appleton, MN; children Makia Thomson of Appleton, MN, and Layton Thomson of Appleton, MN; siblings Benjamin (Kelly) Vaala of Madison, MN, and Hannah (Tygen) Strand of Appleton, MN. Preceding Laura in death were her parents Jim and Bonnie Vaala and grandparents Pete and Millie Hiepler.
