Margaret Adeline Emma (Grothe) Reich was born October 23, 1924, to Ewald and Rosa (Hermann) Grothe in Hayes Township, Swift County, near Kerkhoven, Minnesota. She was baptized on November 23, 1924, and confirmed on September 17, 1939. Margaret attended and graduated from school in Danvers through the eighth grade. She grew up in the Danvers area on a farm. Margaret was the oldest of six children; she had three sisters and two brothers.
On April 16, 1950, Margaret was married to Lyland Reich at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church in Danvers, Minnesota, and they lived on the Reich farm in rural Holloway, Minnesota. This union was blessed with seven children: Carol, Clarice, Violet, Vivian, Milton, Marvin, and Mary. While still at home and after getting married, Margaret worked in the fields and did farm chores. While growing up she was an adult leader in her siblings 4-H club. Margaret was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church in rural Holloway, Minnesota, where she was active in Ladies Aid. She taught Sunday School and helped with quilting at the church.
Margaret enjoyed gardening, canning, and growing flowers. Her grandchildren always liked to help Grandma bake and do chicken chores. Any holiday they would always expect Grandma’s homemade long johns, donuts, or cinnamon rolls. Margaret’s hobbies included quilting, embroidery, puzzles, reading, and word searches. All the children and grandchildren have been blessed with a blue jean quilt made by Margaret, and she enjoyed getting pictures on her ViewClix. At age 93, Margaret was at the lake and decided to go for a jet ski ride.
Margaret moved to Scofield Place in May of 2009 following knee surgery. She enjoyed her time visiting with friends, doing jigsaw puzzles, playing bingo and penny pinchers, and going down for music. Margaret was called home to the Lord on April 14, 2025, at Scandi Haven in Benson. She was 100 years old.
Margaret is survived by her seven children: Carol (Dave) Runke of Willmar, Clarice (Randy) Novak of Willmar, Violet (Robin) Baerwaldt of Big Stone City, SD, Vivian (Doug) Clark of Benson, Milton Reich of Holloway, Marvin Reich of Willmar, and Mary (Greg) Tensen of Brooten; grandchildren: Matthew (Alicia) Runke, Doug (Margaret) Runke, Nathan Runke, Alissa (Nick) Kubasch, Amanda (Nathan) Hansen, Beth Novak, Marissa (Eric) Croatt, Megan (Keinen) Bousquet, Chad Clark, Josh Clark, Ben Tensen, Jacob Tensen, Cassandra (Wyatt) Tensen; step-grandchild Les (Rosie) Baerwaldt; great-grandchildren: Madison, Ellie, Nolan, Avery, Beckett, Declan, Morgan, Harley, Elora, Evander, Bailey, Miles and Kyrie Bousquet, Amberlee and Evan; one great-great-step grandchild; sister-in-law Shirley Grothe, and nieces and nephews.
