Marion George McGovern was born on August 25, 1931 in Philadelphia, PA to Dorothy Emma Greene and George Samuel McGovern. He graduated from John Bartram High School in 1949. He was then employed by American Sugar Refineries for seven years, then by General Electric for two years and finally by IBM for thirty-three years. Marion was a member of the 416th National Guard unit when they were activated in August of 1950. He was transferred to the 707th for schooling and discharged in August of 1952 when he started attending Drexel Institute of Technology Evening College on the GI bill.
In 1956 Marion married Eleanor Marie Urie and moved to Clifton Heights, PA. He graduated from Drexel Institute of Technology in 1963 and moved the young family to Vestal, NY. They moved to Raleigh, NC in 1965 where he retired in January 1991. Eleanor and he moved to Benson, MN in 2007 where he learned to weave for his daughter Diane’s business.
He was an Assistant Scoutmaster in Boy Scouting for two years in Vestal, NY and an adult leader in various positions for twenty-five years in Raleigh, NC. He served as Webelos Leader of the Catholic Cub Pack for four years and Scoutmaster of the Catholic Boy Scout Troop for ten years and an Adult leader for the other six of those years and chaired the Catholic Committee for Scouting for five years. After retirement he was a Master Gardener for eleven years and taught computers to seniors as a member of SeniorNet for twelve years.
He went to the Catholic Church with his wife and children where he served in many capacities such as four years on the Administrative Council and overseeing the building and grounds improvements for the church and school for nine years. He served on two building committees heading one of those groups. He ran the committee for the Catholic high school bus and served on the building committee.
Marion is survived by his best friend, constant companion, and lover, Eleanor; his daughters Diane Trew of Benson, Suzanne Milam (Jack) of Rolesville NC, Kathleen Johnson (Dan) of Benson MN; his sons George McGovern (Karen) of Richmond VA, and Stephen McGovern of Durham NC; grandchildren Jacob Trew, David Trew, Wesley McGovern, Blake McGovern, Garrett McGovern, Landon McGovern, Nikolas McGovern, Camden McGovern, Karson McGovern, Christopher Milam, Taylor Johnson, and Courtney Johnson and great-grandchild Kaden Trew. The twelve grandchildren are eleven boys and one girl. As he calls them, a football team and a cheerleader.
