Funeral services for Maureen Aslakson will be held Saturday, January 25, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at West Zion Lutheran Church in rural Hancock. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the church with the funeral service to follow. Maureen died Sunday, January 19, 2025, at Scandi Haven Village in Benson, Minnesota. She had just celebrated her 92nd birthday.

Maureen Fay Aslakson was born January 16, 1933, in Morris, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Bernie and Myrtle (Larson) Engebretson. She was baptized and confirmed by Pastor Forde at St. John’s Lutheran Church in rural Starbuck. Maureen grew up on a farm in Pope County. She attended District 11 Country School for six years and graduated from Cyrus High School in 1950. After graduation, she attended a one-year practical nursing program at Franklin Hospital School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. In August, 1951, she started working at the Morris Hospital in Morris, Minnesota.

While roller skating at the Glenwood Pavilion, Maureen met Maurice Aslakson. They got married on April 18, 1953. Pastor Forde officiated the ceremony at St. John’s Lutheran Church. They moved to Minneapolis, where Maureen worked at Fairview Hospital for a year. Maurice and Maureen had two sons Jeffrey and Dale. They eventually moved back to the Aslakson homestead in Hoff Township, Pope County. Maureen worked as a nurse for 38 years at a nursing home in Benson, Minnesota, until a car accident forced her to retire.

Maureen loved to travel. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting and tatting, and baking (especially lefse and doughnuts.) She also loved playing cards, reading, traveling, and visiting friends and neighbors. Butchering Day was a Hoff Township holiday, and Maureen had an active part wrapping and trimming! Maureen truly enjoyed caring for her grandchildren. “Little Grandma,” as she was called, took care of her grandchildren in between her working and everything else she did as a farm wife. She was also active in the Women’s Group at West Zion Lutheran Church in rural Hancock, Minnesota.

Maureen is survived by her son Jeffrey (Karen) Aslakson of Hancock, MN; four grandchildren: Jennifer (Jon) Maras, Aaron (Jessica) Aslakson, Grant (Amanda) Aslakson, and Kate (Carter) Cripe; eight great-grandchildren: Ethan and Claire Maras, Vivian and Henrik Aslakson, Brentley and Mila Aslakson, and Harper and Grayson Cripe. She is also survived by her brother Courtney Engebretson of Starbuck, MN, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Maurice Aslakson in 2014, son Dale in 2018, parents Bernie and Myrtle Engebretson, sister Avonell Raaum, brother and sister-in-law Forest and Norma Engebretson, sister-in-law Carol Engebretson, niece Nancy Brusletton, brother and sister-in-law Tom and Delores Aslakson, nephew Steve Aslakson, and parents-in-law Tilford and Clara Aslakson.

The family would like to thank the staff at Scandi Haven Village for their care.
