He attended Country School District 14, which was located where Steve and Gail have made their home. Steve transferred into the Benson Public School system in 7th grade and graduated in 1964 with his best friend Jerry Miller and his cousin Nancy Wanberg. He farmed and milked cows with his dad. His favorite past time was roller skating and he met the love of his life, Gail Johnson, at the Spicer Roller Rink, where she was employed. They were married August 14, 1971.
Steve continued to farm and was also employed as a painter at TCI, Willmar Manufacturing, and Midwest Cylinder. Later he worked for the City of Benson in the Street Department. He finished his work career as the City Street Department Superintendent. Steve and Gail bought the Roller Rink in Benson in August 1980. Steve was a workaholic. He enjoyed striping parking lots, the gravel business, and farming. He had a passion for hunting and looked forward to all the cousins coming home. Steve cherished time with his grandchildren; especially taking them to the roller rink and teaching them how to trap pocket gophers. He loved to sing with Kelly and waltz on roller skates with her. Steve got the travel bug from Kristi and always looked forward to their next adventure. His most recent trip was to Hawaii in January 2020 and Steve said, “This is a trip of a lifetime!”.
