Visitation will be held from 12:30 pm to 2:00 pm on Monday, February 27, at Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Church in Benson, followed by the funeral service at 2:00. Interment will be in the Benson City Cemetery. Zniewski Funeral Home of Benson is assisting the family with the arrangements.
Vera Elizabeth Lund was born April 22, 1935 on the farm in Tara Township Swift County, daughter of Alvin and Hilda (Suckow) Brandt. She was baptized and confirmed at St John’s Lutheran Church rural Holloway. At age 3 the family moved to the “home farm.” Vera attended school district #47 through eighth grade and graduated from Benson High School in 1952.
After high school graduation she worked at Lee’s Variety Store and the courthouse in the Register of Deeds Office. On February 15 th , 1953 she met Lavon Francis Lund of rural Pope County. They were united in marriage October 24, 1953 at St Johns Lutheran Church rural Holloway. They lived at his home until fall of 1954 when they moved to the home farm by Danvers, built a house and spent the rest of their years together there until a short stay at the Starbuck nursing home prior to her passing.
This 69 year union was blessed with 3 children; 2 daughters Sheila and Connie and one son David. After the kids started school she began working for Fingerhut in Benson. Lavon and Vera bought more land and she left this returning to her love of being and working on the farm. There she enjoyed fieldwork, vegetable gardening, tending her large flowerbeds, mowing the lawn, raising chickens and making endless memories for her family.
In later years she was very active and volunteered in many capacities. She enjoyed quilting at home and at church, served on the Swift County Fair Board for 18 years, was an active Homemakers club member, on the Operation Round Up board, secretary of the Tractor Club for 25 years and worked with many other community events. What many people though will remember her for is her lefse making. Who knew this German lady who didn’t know what lefse was when she got married would go on to become the “lefse lady” making innumerable batches at the Benson bakery, in her home, teach classes on it and spend countless hours passing on these skills and memories to her kids, grandkids and great grandkids.
She and Lavon were instrumental in multiple church improvements and had a faith as deep as their love for each other and their passion for the church. They passed this faith onto their kids, grandkids and all they loved and interacted with. Vera always enjoyed spending time with family, grandkids and great grandkids. Her home was always open as was her big heart.
She is survived by her devoted husband Lavon, Children- Sheila (LeRoy) Fahje of Alberta, David (Deb) Lund of Danvers, and son-in-law Ronnie Bjork of Pennock. Grandkids Sarah (Grant) Schmall and 3 great grandchildren of Elbow Lake, Adam (Heather) Fahje and 4 great grandchildren of Danvers, Jason (Abbey) Ebner and 3 great grandchildren of Otsego, Ann (David) Stewart and 5 great grandchildren of Benson. She was preceded in death by her parents Alvin and Hilda Brandt, grandparents Henry and Bertha Brandt and Frank and Anna Suckow and her daughter Connie. Blessed be her memory.
