Vernon Floyd Vergin was born August 12, 1928 in Cashel Township to Fred J. and Anna M. (Christensen) Vergin. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in September, 1928. He was confirmed by Reverend Erwin Schroeder on April 18, 1943, at St. John's. Vernon attended country school and then Benson High School, graduating with the Class of 1946. He served in the United States Army during the Korean conflict, cooking hundreds of meals for those stationed in Kentucky and Texas and developing a lifelong love of good food and cooking.
September 20, 1952, Vernon married Charlotte Soine at Mandt Lutheran Church in rural Chippewa County. They shared 71 years of marriage, farming on the family farm in Cashel township before moving into their home in Benson. In 2019, they moved to Scandi Haven. They shared a large family of friends - playing thousands of hands of various card games, traveling around the United States, and dining out whenever a new or old favorite restaurant beckoned.
Vernon served as the Cashel Township Treasurer for 25 years and volunteered in multiple capacities at Our Redeemer's Lutheran Church, including ushering, commandeering the mashed potatoes for Smorgasbord, and various other projects including the installation of the mosaic at the front of the sanctuary. In his free time, he enjoyed fishing year-round, hunting pheasant and deer, and playing in a horseshoe league for decades. Vernon will be remembered for his quick mind and optimistic spirit, retaining both to the end of his life.
Vernon is survived by his wife Char of Benson, MN; his sister Dee (Allan) White of Guttenberg, IA; and nieces and nephews: Brad (Holly) Svea of Starbuck, MN, Ross (Janet) Romanzak of Forrest, VA, Teri (Phil) Beyer of Spicer, MN, Greg (Dori) Hanson of Hutchinson, MN, Penny (Karl) Waskosky of New Richmond, WI, Lyn (Brian) Solberg of Spring Grove, MN, and Tim (Angie) Hilzinger of Inver Grove Heights, MN.
Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, parents-in-law, one sister Arlyce Svea, and niece, Brenda Carlson. Special thanks to the staff at CentraCare-Benson Hospital, West Wind Village in Morris, and Glacial Ridge Hospice for the wonderful care provided to Vernon in the last two months.
Blessed be his memory.
