Walter Ernest Young

Walter E. Young, died on Saturday morning, August 10, 2024, at the Swift County Benson Hospital. A visitation will be held from 9:30 am to 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, August 17, 2024, at the First Evangelical Free Church in Benson, Minnesota, followed by the funeral service at 11:00 am. The burial will be in the Benson City Cemetery. Zniewski Funeral Home of Benson is assisting the family with the funeral arrangements.

Walter Ernest Young was born on March 20, 1940, in Benson, Minnesota, the son of Ernest Leonard and Agnes Margaret (Larson) Young. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Benson. He grew up on the family farm in Cashel Township, south of Benson. He attended country school District #71 until seventh grade then attended Benson High School. He continued his education at Agricultural School in Morris, Minnesota, for two years, graduating in 1958. He then went to Minneapolis, Minnesota, for a year working at a Steel Manufacturing Company. Walter attended basic training in Missouri and served in the National Guard from 1959 to 1962 in California before returning to farming in Cashel township.

On February 23, 1963, Walter was united in marriage to Ramona Diane Vergin at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Benson. This union was blessed with over 61 years of marriage and four children. They lived on the family farm until 2012 when they moved to Benson. He was a member of the Cashel Hustlers 4-H, Farm Bureau, Dairy Association – DHIA, and card club (buck) for almost 50 years.

Walter played on many different softball teams over the years and played football for the Morris Ag School. He had a deep affection for his cows and dairy farming. He loved spending time with family and friends, especially playing cards. Walter was called from this life on Saturday morning, August 10, 2024, at the Swift County Benson Hospital. He attained the age of 84 years, 4 months, and 21 days of age.

Walter is survived by his wife Ramona of Benson; children: Shanon (Mike) Tait of Brooklyn Park, Brian (Molly) Young of Benson, Pamela (Randy) Marran of St. Michael, and Jason (Sarah) Young of Benson; nine grandchildren: Tyler Ann Marran, Michele Tait, Tyler Bergman, Matthew Marran, Hannah, Katelyn, and Jessica Young, and Maxwell and Lucy Young; two great- grandchildren Maya and Owen Marran; siblings Donald (LuElla) Young of Benson and Phyllis (Tony) Athmann of Benson; nieces, nephews, and several other relatives and friends. Walter was preceded in death by his parents Ernest and Agnes Young, brother and sister-in-law Robert and Marie Young, sister Judith Wilder, and sister-in-law Jackie Young. Blessed be his memory.
